Scope note
The English language in the period between Anglo/Saxon and Modern English, usually considered spoken between 1066 and 1485 CE (or more broadly, ca. 1100/1150-1450/1500). Middle English is characterized by a reduced system of grammatical inflections, an increased lexical borrowing from other languages, especially French and Latin, and great dialectal diversity in writing.
